The Perfect Winter Houseplant for Someone With the Worst Green Thumb
Believe it or not, one of my most interacted with posts is the "How to Keep Your Irises" post! So I figured I'd stick to what I know and love, and share with you the perfect winter houseplant! This plant is low-maintenance and keeps year-round! It's the beautiful Jade plant!
The above photo was taken before I found the cute little mercury glass planter for it, but look how beautiful! I think keeping plants in the house, especially during the winter months, helps you stay a little happier. This plant needs watering ONLY when the soil completely dries out, and it should have a good amount of drainage in the soil (cactus soil, and/or a pot with holes in the bottom). The fact that the soil should get dry before you water it again means you have a few options; 1. You could water it VERY infrequently, or 2: Instead of actually watering it, you could simply mist it with a spray bottle every once in a while. If the leaves begin to fall off, you are watering too frequently or in too large of quantities.
The Jade plant loves sunlight, but can do well with average sunlight. I keep mine in a room NEXT to the room with a large window (the plant has full view of the window, just pretty far away) and it is doing very well. If it gets long periods of full sunlight, it should thrive! Soon I'll get a side table/credenza to sit next to the window and that will be the plant's home so it gets much more sunlight, but in the meantime it will be almost as happy where it's at.
Lastly, if kept cool (60's-low 70's) the Jade plant should begin to bloom! There are little white or purple blooms that the Jade plant grows when it's in the proper conditions- luckily we keep our home around 70 degrees, so my plant SHOULD eventually bloom. I'm way too excited to see that! You should be able to grab a Jade plant at any nursery, they're easy to come by. I'm willing to bet they can also be found in lawn & garden sections of stores like Home Depot, Lowe's, Menard's...etc. If you're local, I got mine from the Eastside Market!
Also, like I said, plants are good for your mental health! Here are some things to read about plants & your mind+body:
As always, thank you for reading! Go get a Jade plant!
