Easy Porch Updates

I don't know if you guys have noticed, but it is definitely officially fall! The farmer's almanac said we were supposed to have our first frost last night so I almost brought in the zinnias- but our weather forecast suggested differently. Still- how exciting??

At the changing of the seasons I'm always inspired to make a physical change of some sort- but since I just updated my front porch, that need was basically already satisfied. It can be tough starting a new project- no matter how simple the project. So I thought I'd share my thoughts on this small project here along with some of the great finds I came across.
If you're not already super into decorating and haven't really nailed down your "style" yet, a few good places to browse are Pinterest (duh) and a good ol' Southern Living Magazine! If you're using Pinterest, use a broad search term such as "front porch decor", or even just "front porch" so you'll get the widest variety of styles/colors/ideas returned to you. If you're looking through a magazine, you can take inspiration from any decoration article that's shared. Even if you fall in love with photos of a living room they're sharing, you can incorporate similar textures and colors on your front porch! I drew inspiration from a super old photo of a back patio in Southern Living Magazine that I can't seem to locate any more. I loved the laid back and almost beach-y feel of the design and I mixed it with Midwest culture by adding a semi-rustic sign and distressed rug.
Our front porch really started off pretty bleak and we only added a few things that really turned it around.
1. Fresh paint- if you have dingy furniture on your porch, oftentimes there's no need to go out and purchase all new furniture. In my case, I had a nice adirondack chair whose stain was just wearing thin and it made the chair look super dated. I just ran to the store, picked up outdoor paint, and got to work! That alone made a huge difference.

2. Rugs- Not only just "rugs", but appropriately sized rugs. For my porch, I wanted the rug to be a large as possible without taking up every square inch of the porch itself. So I measured from about halfway under the chair all the way to the far end of the door, leaving some porch on either side of the rug. I found my blue and white rug (linked similar, from Nordstrom) from our local Marshall's and they had a great selection of outdoor rugs! We did look during the summer, which probably helped.

3. Signs- Having a sign on your front porch that matches your personality can be the perfect thing to pull the porch together. A simple "welcome" sign always works. I found a sign that says "stay awhile" that I feel adds to the homey-ness of our space and I honestly hope makes people feel welcome!
Other than updating just these few things, make sure to stick to a color scheme that's true to who you are-not simply what's trendy! It'll make finding the right items easier and you'll be much happier with the outcome. While I was searching for the perfect pieces for our front porch, I saved so many things that we considered, and I'll share those for you below.

Thank you for reading!
