Brown Sugar Orange Cinnamon Rolls
You guys flipped out over Southern Living's cherry/pecan rolls when I posted them on Instagram! For good reason. They were amazing. But my favorite breakfast treat in the world is a good old orange roll and the recipe seemed like it could easily be altered to be an orange roll! Sooo that's exactly what I did. Most of the basic bread ingredients are the same, I just changed the "flavor" ingredients, lol if that's a thing. I think they turned out phenomenally. They taste like a brown sugar roll with a subtle orange hint. I hope you love them!
Ingredients:
DOUGH
1 8oz container sour cream
6 tbsp butter
1 3/4 tsp salt
1/4 C & 1 tsp granulated sugar
1/3 cup warm water (I microwaved for 30 seconds)
1 (1/4oz) package active dry yeast
2 eggs beaten
zest of 1/2 orange
3 3/4- 4 1/4 C bread flour
FILLING
1 C packed brown sugar
zest from 1/2 orange
1/2 C Emerald brand glazed pecans, chopped
4 tbsp softened butter
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp cardamom
GLAZE
1 C powdered sugar
2 tbsp fresh orange juice
Method:
1. Prepare dough: cook sour cream, butter, salt, and 1/4 C granulated sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until butter just melts. Remove from heat and cool for 10 minutes.
2. Stir warm water together with yeast and 1 tsp granulated sugar in a separate bowl- set aside and wait for it to get foamy/bubbly.
3. In a large bowl, beat sour cream mixture, yeast mixture, eggs, and orange zest gradually adding 3 3/4 C flour until a soft dough forms.
4. Put dough on a floured work surface and knead until smooth and elastic. You may add an additional 1 1/4 C of bread flour if needed. Put in a lightly greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Put the covered bowl in the refrigerator to chill for 8-24 hours.
5. Turn out dough on a floured surface after chilling and roll out to around 1/4 inch thick. Coat your pie pan with olive oil and place parchment paper cut to the size of the round bottom in the pan.
6. Prepare filling: stir together brown sugar, orange zest, softened butter, chopped pecans, cinnamon and cardamom to create a sandy texture. (The first time I made this it was super wet and not that sandy and it stilled turned out delicious 😊)
7. Spread filling over the rolled out dough and roll the dough up "jelly-roll" style. Using a serrated knife, cut the roll into cinnamon rolls about 1 inch thick. Arrange rolls in the pie pan and cover with plastic wrap. Let it set in a warm place for 1- 1 1/2 hours.
8. Preheat oven to 350 and cook for 35-40 minutes after removing the plastic wrap. Watch for the rolls to brown and cover with tin foil if they begin to get too brown.
9. Prepare the glaze (optional step- but a delicious step): whisk together powdered sugar and orange juice. Drizzle over the bread while still warm.
Enjoy!!
