Minimalist's Guide to Fall Decorations

I think I need to preface this post by saying I am not a minimalist 😂 That's not what I'm trying to get across here. But with so many fall decorations to choose from they all tend to get overwhelming and they didn't really feel like me. There is a fine line between festive and a little too much and honestly I feel like if I get swept up in all the decorations I won't know when to stop! I found something that works for me and reminds me of the minimalist mentality so I wanted to share how you can decorate without getting too over the top. Side note- we planted this grass a few short weeks ago and its growing so well! Our entire front yard used to be completely mulched and it was such a project to clean up. We have more in the works for this yard but we're so happy with where we're at!

They key to fall decorating like a minimalist? Focusing on nature! We have this huge retaining wall that I knew could benefit from a pumpkin or two (or 27 gourds) so I got to work searching for gourds and pumpkins to decorate with. If I were doing this indoors, I would have chosen faux gourds, but dealing with Kansas wind means they'd need to be a lot heavier and therefore, real. If anyone has tips on what to do with gourds and pumpkins following fall holidays other than trash them...please let me know!

Here are some fantastic faux gourd bundles that I found:

If you plan to decorate solely with pumpkins and gourds like I did, it's important to choose a variety. You'll want varying colors, shapes, and sizes to create visually interesting but balanced collection of pumpkins and gourds. I chose to prop mine up in a few of the corners of our retaining walls. Initially my intention was to stop here (like I said above, sometimes I don't know when to stop!) but now I'm thinking I'll pick up a few more large pumpkins and place them all just a few feet apart all along the front portion of the wall. Thoughts?? Too much? Just enough??

Other than pumpkins and gourds, things like branches, faux fall fruit, leaf wreathes, throw pillows and blankets in natural fall colors (burgundy, muted shades of yellow, oranges, browns...etc) are all very festive ways to decorate without being so in your face. Truly take inventory of how nature decorates on its own and emanate that in and around your home! I've found Kirkland's, Hobby Lobby, and Marshall's are super affordable places to find a variety of trendy and classic decor pieces that will serve you well! If you have a go-to place to shop for seasonal decor please drop your suggestions in the comments.

I hope this post gave you some inspiration for fall decorating! Thank you for reading!
